When weighing up which battery type you should choose for your caravan or camper trailer, you’ll typically encounter two main types of caravan battery systems: AGM Vs. Lithium. AGM batteries have long been the standard choice, especially for entry-level setups, and are the more cost-effective solution with regard to ‘upfront’ costs. However, lithium batteries are rapidly gaining popularity due to their numerous advantages.
Comparing AGM and Lithium Batteries
AGM Batteries:
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are known for their cost-effectiveness and have long been the standard choice, making them a common feature in many new camper trailers and caravans straight from the showroom floor. They operate efficiently between 50-100% of their capacity and it’s recommended that they’re not discharged below 50%, due to risk of damage. This means that if you have a 200 amp-hour AGM battery, you should only use 100 amp-hours of its power. AGM batteries have a typical recycle or recharge rate from flat to full of about 400 to 500 cycles, giving you around 3-4 years of use (but sometimes up to 7, depending on the battery itself and how well it’s been maintained). However, they can get pretty heavy, with a standard AGM battery weighing around 30 to 33 kilograms. For a caravan needing two batteries, this can add up to 66 kilograms, significantly adding to the weight of your setup.
Lithium Batteries:
Lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular due to their superior performance and efficiency, offering several key benefits. Firstly, lithium batteries allow you to use up to 98% of their capacity, meaning a 200 amp-hour lithium battery can provide almost the full 200 amp-hours of power.
They also have a much higher recharge cycle rate of around 3000 cycles, meaning a significantly longer lifespan than AGM batteries. Not only this, but lithium batteries are much lighter, often weighing around 10-20 kilograms – significantly less than their AGM counterparts. When it comes to the ATM (Aggregated Trailer Mass) of your caravan or trailer, there’s always plenty or gear we want to take camping, so saving a bit of weight here always helps and it can help improve fuel efficiency as well.
Lithium batteries also charge faster than AGM batteries – up to twice as fast, in fact. This efficiency in charging makes lithium batteries a good choice with ever changing sun (if you’re running solar), or if you’re parked up at camp and not driving as often.
However, it’s crucial to be cautious when purchasing lithium batteries, as some sellers may misrepresent their products. Always verify the true capacity of the battery, as some may advertise 100 amp-hours but only deliver 60, for example. Ensuring you buy from reputable source/ or a respected brand can help you dodge a lemon.
Maintenance Tips for Battery Longevity
To maximize the lifespan of your battery, whether AGM or lithium, keep it topped up when not in use. Solar panels can be a great way to maintain charge levels, especially if your trailer is self-sufficient with multiple panels. If solar isn’t an option, plugging your trailer into a 240-volt power source can also keep the batteries charged. Regular inspections are essential—check that terminals are tight, the battery is secure, and there are no unusual smells, leaks, or bulging.
When choosing a battery, consider where you’ll be traveling, what appliances you’ll be using, and whether weight is an issue. These factors will help determine the best battery type for your needs and budget.
Which Caravan Battery System is best for you?
Choosing between AGM and lithium batteries depends on your specific needs, such as where you’ll be traveling, the appliances you’ll be using, and the importance of weight in your setup. While AGM batteries offer a lower upfront cost, lithium batteries provide greater efficiency, longevity, lighter weight and faster charging times, making them a worthwhile investment for many caravan and camper trailer owners.
