Tow-vehicle load capacity upgrades — Sandgate
Vehicle GVM & Load Capacity Upgrades Brisbane
Assess tow-vehicle payload, axle loads and available GVM upgrade pathways before adding more passengers, accessories, cargo or towball load.
Know which limit you are actually approaching
GVM, Payload, Axle Loads and Towing Capacity Are Different Limits
A tow vehicle can reach its legal load limit through passengers, accessories, cargo and towball load before it reaches the maximum towing figure shown in the brochure. That is why load planning needs to consider the complete combination, not only the caravan’s weight.
GVM
Gross Vehicle Mass is the maximum permitted mass of the loaded tow vehicle.
Payload
Payload is the usable capacity for passengers, cargo, accessories and imposed towball load within the vehicle’s limits.
Axle Loads
Front and rear axle limits can be exceeded even when total vehicle mass appears acceptable.
Towball Load
Ball load adds weight to the tow vehicle and can significantly affect rear axle load and remaining payload.
Towing Capacity
The vehicle’s maximum braked towing figure is a separate limit and does not override GVM or axle ratings.
GCM
Gross Combination Mass can also affect how much vehicle and trailer mass can be carried together, depending on the vehicle and approved upgrade pathway.
The vehicle and caravan need to be weighed as a system
Accessories and Towball Load Can Use Payload Faster Than Expected
Bull bars, winches, canopies, drawers, fridges, roof racks, passengers, tools and luggage all contribute to vehicle mass. Once the caravan is attached, towball load adds more weight to the vehicle and often increases rear axle loading.
Before discussing an upgrade, it helps to understand the current loaded configuration and which limit is actually being approached.
A clear assessment process
How a Vehicle Load Capacity Upgrade Is Assessed
Confirm the Vehicle & Setup
We review the exact vehicle, caravan, accessories, suspension and intended touring load.
Identify the Relevant Limits
We consider GVM, axle limits, towball load, towing capacity and other ratings that apply to the combination.
Check Available Upgrade Pathways
Where an approved GVM or related upgrade is available, we explain the compatible components and certification requirements.
Install, Certify & Document
Approved components are fitted and the required certification or documentation is completed through the applicable pathway.
What We May Need to Consider
- Vehicle make, model, year and variant
- Current GVM and axle ratings
- Existing suspension and modifications
- Caravan ATM and loaded mass
- Towball load
- Passengers and normal cargo
- Bull bar, winch, canopy and drawers
- Roof racks, fridges, tools and touring accessories
- Current front and rear axle loads
- Whether an approved upgrade exists for the vehicle

Important terminology
Caravan ATM and Vehicle GVM Are Not the Same Thing
ATM — Aggregate Trailer Mass — is a trailer or caravan rating. GVM — Gross Vehicle Mass — is the loaded tow-vehicle rating. A vehicle suspension upgrade does not automatically increase either figure.
If the issue is the caravan itself being too heavy, that requires a separate caravan-weight and compliance assessment rather than a vehicle GVM upgrade.
Not Sure Which Weight Limit You Are Hitting?
Send us the vehicle, caravan and accessory details. We can help identify whether the concern is payload, axle load, GVM, towing capacity, towball load or a combination of factors.
Vehicle GVM & Load Capacity Upgrade FAQs
What is GVM?
Gross Vehicle Mass is the maximum permitted mass of the loaded vehicle, including passengers, cargo, accessories and imposed towball load.
What is ATM?
Aggregate Trailer Mass is a trailer or caravan rating. It is different from the tow vehicle’s GVM.
Does heavier suspension automatically increase GVM?
No. Springs, shocks or air assistance do not automatically change the legal GVM. An approved upgrade pathway and required certification are needed where available.
Can towball load make my vehicle overweight?
Yes. Towball load adds to vehicle mass and often increases rear axle load, reducing the payload available for passengers, accessories and cargo.
Can I still exceed an axle rating after a GVM upgrade?
Yes. Individual axle ratings still matter. The total vehicle mass can be within an approved GVM while one axle is overloaded.
Does a GVM upgrade increase towing capacity?
Not automatically. Towing capacity is a separate vehicle rating and depends on the specific approved upgrade and manufacturer or certification limits.
What information should I provide?
Provide the exact vehicle details, caravan details, towball load if known, accessories fitted, typical passengers and cargo, and any current weight measurements.
Where do you assess vehicle GVM upgrades in Brisbane?
AllBrand Caravan Services assesses tow-vehicle load and upgrade options from 101 Connaught Street, Sandgate QLD 4017 on Brisbane’s northside.
Work Out the Weight Limits Before Adding More Gear
Send us the vehicle, caravan, accessories and any weight figures you already have. We can help identify which limits matter and whether an approved upgrade pathway is available.
