accessdoors

AllBrand Caravan Service’s access doors are designed with the primary aim of providing secure and efficient access to vital areas of your caravan. The doors can be fitted anywhere in your caravan, where internal access is difficult. However, the most widely used application of the doors is for critical areas in the walls and ceilings of the caravan.

Perfect for both retrofitted and new caravans, AllBrand Caravan Services access doors offer easy access to the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems of the caravan. They are also great for easy access to a battery or an appliance for maintenance.

At AllBrand Caravan Services, our access doors for caravans are made available in a variety of sizes through our collaboration with the manufacturers. The design of the doors is well suited for common framing dimensions. We also provide modifications and special sizes on request. Other additional features available for the caravan access door frame includes custom paint colours, selection of finishes and security locks.

We take pride in our ability to offer a variety of options to our customers when it comes to access doors for caravans. Our commitment to quality makes us the top choice for caravan owners who demand the best quality access doors.

  • Cabinet work required to sympathetically accommodate the air handler and compressor
  • Additional clearance space required behind and below the air handler
  • Method of disguising piping between the air handler and the compressor
  • The need for a refrigerant plumber to commission and certify the unit
  • Requirement to mount the compressor on the off side of the caravan to avoid return air within the annexe (if applicable)
  • The need for a 240V outlet near the compressor

AllBrand says: “A unique concept in the air conditioning market with outlets fitted in your preferred location.”

Raising Your Van

Finally, put an end to the horrible grinding noises from the rear jacks, level rides, ball mount, step and rear roof of your van! Modern caravans seem to be built lower and lower to the ground. They look nice and streamlined but is this really practical?

  • Improved clearance under your rear jacks—no more scraping
  • Less gouging of level ride bars in driveways etc.
  • Increased chassis strength
  • Easier to get the wheels off to change a tyre
  • Opportunity for off bitumen travelling
  • No loss of tow ability or noticeable change to fuel consumption

This is accomplished by cutting the front and rear spring-mount fittings off the chassis, and attaching a 50mm, 75mm or 100mm long steel beam and refitting the springs. We will lift the van by exactly the thickness of the beam. We recommend lifting by 50mm or 75mm in most cases. This gives effective clearance without altering the appearance of your caravan. 100mm usually exposes the top of the tyres in the wheel arch and this can look a bit “odd”.

  • Stepping up higher into the caravan can be physically difficult for some customers.
  • Raising more than 50mm can create a problem if you have annexed walls. The draft strip and side wall flap may not reach the ground.
  • Lifting the van 100mm could make it difficult for the wind down corner steadies to reach the ground.
  • The towball height on the car needs to be adjusted up by the amount we lift the van. This is necessary to ensure the van travels level on the road. In cases where a Hayman Reese weight distributing hitch is used this is a simple job done by Hardings when you pick up.
  • And the old “Someone lowered the carport roof” trick! Just because there is 50 or 75mm clearance above the roof when the van is parked doesn’t mean the same clearance when you are backing it in. Dipping driveways and variable paving can bring you unstuck. Best pin some 50 or 75mm cardboard onto the lowest point of the roof beam and watch as the van comes in and out.
  • Is there already a high centre of gravity which may be further affected by raising?

AllBrand Caravan Services has become experts at raising caravans to achieve more sensible ground clearance on all types of vans.

Resealing Your Van

It is a distressing sight for the owner to see their van with aluminium and rot revealed beneath. Often just small symptoms can be clues to significant damage behind the cladding. Dark stains in corners, around windows and hatches or moisture sitting on window sills and ledges should be a catalyst for investigation. Sometimes water entry points may be obvious: cracked or missing sealant under moulds, flaking silicon on the roof or missing screws or rivets. But leaks are usually not specific and more likely result from the sealant being at the end of its life and no longer effective.

By ten years of age every caravan must be inspected for sealant deterioration. Unfortunately some material becomes vulnerable as early as 6 to 8 years. Sealants used in the last 5 years are proving generally more durable. Nevertheless, inspect that stored or unused van regularly.

Front Matting

Front matting improves the appearance of your van and helps protect it from stone chips. These are available in many different colours to suit your individual van needs. The fitting procedure consists of removing the corner edgemoulds and front boot, laying the matting onto the front of the van and refitting and resealing the moulds. The complete job costs between $750 and $1000, including new vinyl on the boot lid but this price will be less where no front boot exists or a reseal is already underway.

Let AllBrand Caravan Services determine your rig’s Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM). ATM is the total mass of your van and any incidental payload you add to the rig (in below diagram, sum of A, B, and C), for example, food supplies, water supply, gas, and any luggage you may have packed. The ATM of your van is manufacturer-specified, or, alternatively, you can refer to the diagram as a reference.

Weight-distributing Hitches/Level Rides

van bg
van2 bg

Weight-distributing hitches (or “level rides”) are an incredibly important towing aid which attach between the tow vehicle and the caravan. The purpose of these devices is to increase the overall stability of the rig by increasing the front wheel traction of the vehicle. The below image illustrates this effect. Because of the very position of the link between the tow vehicle and the van, the weight is placed almost entirely over the rear wheels of the tow vehicle, which in effect lifts the front end, which in turn reduces the rig’s ability to turn, brake, or ride properly.

This effect may contribute to things which could be described as “pitching” or “floating”, overall loss of feeling in the rig’s steering, increased tyre wear on the rear wheels, or, possibly total loss of control. This can be especially true if the rig is under tow in more difficult conditions, for example on wet/slippery roads or in channels of high or turbulent wind drafts.

The purpose of a level-riding device is to spread the towball weight as evenly across all centres of the vehicle as evenly as possible, or, quite literally, make the car “level ride”. They act by way of the fulcrum process, whereby some weight is transferred from the rear of the rig through a pivot arrangement to the front wheels when lift is applied. This has the distinct advantage of helping to combat all of the problems outlined above, and overall making the entire rig much safer to drive.

Selecting the right level ride for your vehicle is quite simple – it is essentially based on the towball weight of your rig. The below table will assist you in choosing.

Friction Sway Control

A swaying rig is one of the most serious problems you can face while caravanning – not only is it a major cause of anxiety, but it is also capable of causing major accidents. There are many things which will cause a rig to sway. The most likely are:

  • Level rides not being adequate enough to stabIlise the rig and not being able to keep the van under control
  • Poor loading of the caravan or poor caravan design. If the towball weight of the van is too low (below about 10% of the overall weight of the van) then a likely overloading of weight will occur behind the axle and can cause a pendulum-like rocking which in turn leads to rig sway. Things like bike racks affixed to the rear of the van are a common cause of such instability.
  • Being as heavy as, or in some cases, heavier than the tow vehicle, the caravan can often exert a form of “dominance” over the tow vehicle and begin to dictate the handling of the rig.
  • Encountering turbulence, such as when a truck or road train passes at high speeds, the rig will begin to pitch and yaw towards the passing vehicle based on this sudden area of low pressure created in its wake.

If you have encountered any of these things, it’s likely that a sway control system could be a major benefit to you. Aside from increasing the overall “feel” of the rig, it will also improve the safety of the rig, reduce fatigue on you as a driver, and, as a result, mean your caravanning experiences are much more enjoyable. Any rig over 15′ in length will notice a vast improvement once a sway control system has been fitted.

Essentially, sway control works by a relatively simple process. Essentially, a sway control system acts as a kind of dampener which makes it difficult for the caravan to move out of line with the tow vehicle. This means that unless the tow vehicle initiates the turn (ie. going around a corner for example), the caravan will stay tightly in line with the tow vehicle at all times.

To fit, an adaptor lug is fitted to a heavy duty level ride ballmount, and a bracket to the A-frame component of the caravan’s linkage. The sway control system attaches quickly between the two and is physically held in place by “R” clips whilst in use. Generally, installation will take around 1 to 2 hours.

Towing Mirrors

Towing mirrors are an essential part of any on-road rig. Key things to pay attention to when selecting the right mirror for your application include stability of the mirrors once fitted, width, and the ease of actually fitting them. AllBrand stock a full range of extension mirrors to suit a multitude of vehicles and applications. Bring your vehicle to our store and we can help you find the correct mirror for your (and your rig’s!) needs. We recommend door-mounted mirrors in most applications as they outperform most other mirror types due to superior stability, width and usability considerations. Best of all, they suit most vehicles.
