Common Mechanical Issues in Caravans and Motorhomes

Understanding and Preventing Common Mechanical Issues

Keep your journey smooth with regular checks and smart maintenance

Caravans and motorhomes offer freedom and flexibility, letting you explore at your own pace while taking the comforts of home on the road. But like any vehicle, they’re not immune to mechanical wear and tear. Understanding the common issues that can arise—and how to prevent them—helps ensure your travels are safe, reliable, and enjoyable.

Even if your caravan or motorhome spends long periods parked, mechanical systems can still develop problems without regular use and maintenance. Staying ahead of these issues can save you time, money, and frustration.

Suspension and Brakes

Due to the weight they carry, caravans and motorhomes place considerable stress on suspension components and braking systems. Uneven tyre wear, pulling to one side, or increased stopping distance can signal worn or imbalanced parts.

Brakes can also degrade over time due to corrosion, especially if the vehicle is stored outside or unused for extended periods. Regular inspections, especially before long trips, are essential.

Also check brake fluid levels and condition—low or contaminated fluid can impact braking performance, especially on steep descents or in hot weather.

Wheel Bearings and Tyres

Wheel bearings often go unnoticed until they cause serious issues. When neglected, they can overheat and seize, leading to dangerous situations on the road. Regular greasing and checks for noise or looseness can prevent failure.

Tyres can degrade with age even if they appear to have good tread. Look for cracks in the sidewalls or flat spots from long-term parking. Keeping tyres inflated to the correct pressure is also key to avoiding blowouts and uneven wear.

Don’t forget to check the spare tyre too—it should be in good condition and properly inflated in case of emergency.

Electrical and Charging Systems

Caravans and motorhomes rely on dual battery systems, solar setups, and a range of 12V appliances. Faults in wiring, connectors, or charging systems can cause lights, fridges, or pumps to malfunction.

Corrosion, vibration, or poor connections are common culprits. It’s important to check for voltage drops, battery condition, and to ensure your system is charging properly both when driving and while stationary using solar or mains power.

Cooling and Engine Components (Motorhomes)

Motorhomes, being self-propelled, are exposed to similar mechanical risks as regular vehicles. Overheating, coolant leaks, or fan failure are all issues that can occur on long drives, especially in hot conditions.

Regular servicing of the radiator, hoses, and coolant system is crucial. Keep an eye on engine temperature while driving and listen for any unusual noises or warning lights.

Preventative Maintenance Saves Trouble

Scheduled servicing and seasonal inspections can catch early signs of wear before they become problems. Sticking to manufacturer-recommended service intervals, checking systems before and after long trips, and staying alert to unusual noises, smells, or handling changes makes a big difference.

It’s also worth testing your caravan’s breakaway system and battery periodically, especially before any long-distance trip. These systems are vital for legal compliance and towing safety.

Keeping your caravan or motorhome under cover, or using quality covers and tyre protectors when parked outdoors, can also help slow deterioration.
