What Is Rubber Torsion Suspension?
Rubber torsion suspension combines the axle and springing action in a compact assembly. The wheel hub is connected to a torsion arm, which acts against rubber cords contained inside the axle tube. As the arm moves under load, the rubber compresses and resists rotation.
Because each wheel can respond independently, this type of system is commonly described as independent rubber suspension. It has fewer external moving suspension parts than a traditional leaf-spring arrangement and provides a degree of self-damping through the rubber elements.
Rubber torsion systems are used on many caravans and trailers, including products commonly referred to as Torflex or independent rubber suspension. However, brand, model, capacity, mounting arrangement and arm angle all matter when identifying or replacing an axle.
It is important not to assume that every rubber torsion axle is interchangeable. A replacement must suit the caravan’s load requirements, chassis, hub face, bracket spacing, ride height, brakes, wheels and required clearances.

Compact Design
The axle and suspension action are combined into one unit, reducing the number of exposed suspension components beneath the caravan.
Independent Wheel Movement
Each wheel responds to road inputs independently, which can reduce the transfer of some road shock across the caravan.
Self-Damping Action
The rubber elements provide springing and damping characteristics without the same external spring arrangement used by leaf suspension.
Not Maintenance-Free Everywhere
The internal torsion assembly may require little routine servicing, but brakes, bearings, hubs, seals, tyres, wheels, mounting fasteners and the surrounding chassis still require inspection.
No suspension system can eliminate every bump, prevent all sway or compensate for incorrect loading, unsuitable tyres, poor tow-vehicle setup or excessive speed. Rubber torsion suspension must still be correctly specified and kept within its rated application.
Signs Your Rubber Torsion Suspension Needs Inspection
- The caravan sits lower on one side
- One torsion arm appears to sit at a different angle
- Reduced clearance between the tyre and body
- Uneven or rapid tyre wear
- The caravan feels unusually harsh or unsettled
- Tyres contact wheel arches or surrounding bodywork
- Visible damage, corrosion or movement around axle mounts
- Cracked welds or damage near mounting brackets
- Changes in ride height after overloading or an impact
- Brake, bearing or hub concerns
- Wheel alignment appears incorrect
- The suspension has been damaged by a pothole, kerb or off-road impact
- The caravan’s weight or intended use has changed
- The history or rating of an older axle is unclear
These symptoms do not confirm that the torsion unit has failed. Tyres, wheel alignment, bearings, brakes, loading, chassis condition and other factors can produce similar signs. A workshop assessment helps separate the symptom from its actual cause.

1. System Identification
We identify the axle or suspension type and inspect available rating plates, markings and specifications.
2. Ride Height and Position
We look for side-to-side differences, unusual arm angles, reduced clearance and signs the caravan is sitting incorrectly.
3. Mounting and Chassis
Fasteners, brackets, welds and nearby chassis areas are checked for movement, cracking, corrosion or impact damage.
4. Related Running Gear
Where included in the booked scope, we assess tyres, hubs, bearings, brakes and visible alignment concerns that may affect the diagnosis.
Can Rubber Torsion Suspension Be Repaired?
That depends on which part of the system is causing the problem. Related items such as brakes, bearings, seals, hubs, wheels and some mounting hardware may be serviceable or replaceable.
The rubber cords and internal torsion components are contained within the axle assembly. If the internal system has deteriorated, lost ride height or suffered significant damage, replacing the axle assembly may be more appropriate than attempting an internal repair.
We assess the condition first and explain the available options. Replacement feasibility depends on identifying a compatible unit and confirming its capacity, dimensions, mounting method and brake configuration.
When Is an Upgrade Worth Considering?
An upgrade may be considered when the current system is damaged, unsuitable for the caravan’s verified operating weight, no longer supported, or inconsistent with how the caravan is now used.
Changing from rubber torsion suspension to another design is not a simple component swap. The chassis, mounting structure, ride height, wheel alignment, brakes, load ratings and compliance implications must all be assessed.
For some caravans, a correct replacement torsion axle is the most sensible solution. For others, a properly engineered suspension retrofit may be considered. We will not recommend a more complex conversion unless it is appropriate for the caravan and intended travel.
Rubber Torsion Versus Other Caravan Suspension Types
Rubber Torsion
Compact independent suspension with rubber elements contained inside the axle. Selection depends heavily on correct axle specifications and installation geometry.
Leaf Spring
A widely used mechanical arrangement with visible, serviceable spring and shackle components. Condition, load sharing and bush wear require attention.
Independent Coil
Uses coil springs and normally separate damping components. Different products are designed for different loads and terrain.
Air Suspension
Uses air springs and associated control equipment. It can provide levelling or ride-height benefits where the complete system is correctly designed.
There is no single “best” suspension for every caravan. The appropriate system depends on the chassis, weight, tyre and wheel package, road use, desired clearance, maintenance expectations and manufacturer or engineering requirements.

How does rubber torsion suspension work?
Rubber torsion suspension combines the axle and springing action in a compact assembly. A torsion arm connected to the wheel hub rotates against rubber cords held under compression inside the axle tube. As the wheel rises over a bump, the rubber resists the arm’s rotation and helps absorb and dampen the movement. Each wheel can respond with less direct effect on the wheel opposite it. The axle’s load rating, starting arm angle, mounting position and dimensions are all important because they influence ride height, wheel travel and how the caravan carries its weight.
Is rubber torsion suspension the same as Torflex suspension?
Torflex is a product name used for a type of rubber torsion axle. People often use “Torflex”, “torsion axle”, “rubber torsion suspension” and “independent rubber suspension” as if they mean exactly the same thing, but products vary between manufacturers and models. Load capacity, hub face, mounting centres, arm angle, brake configuration and installation requirements can differ. A replacement should therefore be identified from the actual axle markings and measurements rather than ordered from a generic description or appearance alone.
How long does rubber torsion suspension last on a caravan?
There is no reliable single lifespan for every rubber torsion axle. Service life depends on age, loading, kilometres travelled, road conditions, heat, storage, impacts and whether the axle has consistently operated within its rating. Internal rubber can gradually lose elasticity even when the outside of the axle still looks sound. Reduced ride height, unequal arm angles, a harsher ride and abnormal tyre wear can justify an inspection. Condition and measurements are more useful than age alone when deciding whether an axle remains serviceable.
Does rubber torsion suspension need servicing?
The sealed rubber elements inside many torsion axles have fewer routine service points than a traditional leaf-spring arrangement, but that does not make the caravan’s running gear maintenance-free. Wheel bearings, brakes, hubs, seals, tyres, wheels, mounting fasteners, brackets and nearby chassis areas still require scheduled inspection and servicing. Ride height, torsion-arm position and tyre wear should also be monitored for changes. Follow the caravan and axle manufacturer’s schedule, and arrange additional checks after severe impacts, overloading, rough-road travel or a noticeable change in handling.
What are the signs of a failing rubber torsion axle?
Common warning signs include the caravan sitting low or leaning, one torsion arm resting at a different angle, reduced tyre-to-body clearance, rapid or uneven tyre wear, excessive vibration, a harsh ride or a wheel appearing out of position. Cracking, corrosion or movement around mounting brackets also needs attention. These signs do not automatically prove that the internal rubber has failed because loading, tyres, bearings, brakes, wheel alignment and chassis damage can create similar symptoms. A complete suspension and running-gear assessment is needed before deciding on repair or replacement.
Can the rubber inside a caravan torsion axle be repaired or replaced?
On many caravan torsion axles, the internal rubber elements are installed as part of a sealed manufactured assembly and are not treated as a normal workshop-service component. If testing and measurements indicate that the internal rubber has deteriorated, the appropriate repair may be replacement of the correctly specified axle assembly. Related components such as brakes, bearings, hubs, seals and some mounting hardware may still be separately serviceable. The repair path depends on the axle design, damage, parts support and manufacturer requirements.
How much does it cost to replace a rubber torsion axle on a caravan?
Replacement cost varies because a torsion axle must be matched to the caravan rather than selected by length alone. Pricing can be affected by load capacity, single- or tandem-axle configuration, hub face, bracket spacing, starting arm angle, brakes, hubs, wheel pattern, freight, availability, fabrication, alignment and labour. Damage to mounting brackets or the chassis can add further work. Why is my caravan sitting lower on one side?
A caravan can sit lower on one side because of uneven loading, different tyre pressures or sizes, internal torsion deterioration, a bent arm or spindle, mounting movement, impact damage or a chassis concern. Permanent items such as batteries, water tanks and appliances can also produce a weight imbalance. Compare the caravan on level ground in its normal loaded condition, but do not crawl underneath an unsupported van. The suspension, weights, tyre clearances and mounting structure should be assessed before concluding that the axle itself has failed.
Can a rubber torsion axle cause uneven caravan tyre wear?
Yes, suspension position and axle alignment can contribute to uneven tyre wear, but they are not the only possible causes. Incorrect tyre pressure, overloading, poor weight distribution, bearing play, a bent spindle, impact damage, mismatched tyres or movement at the axle mounts may create similar patterns. Replacing the tyres without correcting the underlying fault can lead to the same wear returning. Diagnosis should consider the tyre pattern, loaded ride height, wheel position, hubs, bearings, suspension mounts and the axle’s alignment relative to the chassis.
Can rubber torsion suspension be fitted to an existing caravan?
It may be possible to retrofit rubber torsion suspension, but it is not a simple universal axle swap. The selected unit must suit the caravan’s ATM, chassis strength, available mounting area, wheel and tyre clearances, hub face, brakes and intended use. The change can also affect ride height, entry-step height, plumbing clearance and load distribution. Structural modification, engineering input or certification may be required. In some cases, retaining the existing suspension type or fitting a correctly specified replacement axle is the more practical option.
Is rubber torsion suspension suitable for off-road caravans?
Some rubber torsion systems are designed and rated for particular rough-road applications, while others are intended mainly for sealed-road or moderate-use trailers. Suitability depends on the exact axle model, load rating, available wheel travel, ground clearance, mounting design and the caravan manufacturer’s stated limitations. The words “independent suspension” do not automatically mean that a caravan is suitable for severe off-road travel. The complete caravan—including its chassis, tyres, brakes, clearances and loaded weight—must be considered before choosing a suspension system.
Can I tow a caravan with a damaged or sagging torsion axle?
Do not keep towing if the caravan is leaning badly, a wheel is visibly out of position, tyre clearance has become unsafe, a tyre is rubbing, a mounting point is loose or cracked, or the caravan has become unstable. Continued towing can damage tyres, brakes, bearings, bodywork and the chassis and may reduce towing control. Stop in a safe location and call for advice. Photographs and axle markings can help with an initial discussion, but a remote conversation cannot confirm that the caravan is safe to move.
